Financial Times Appeal - Photography Auction 2012

I am very pleased to have one my of images, ‘Cape Neddick, Maine, 1997’ included in the FT Photography Auction which this year is in aid of the The Global Fund for Children.

The image was taken on a cold and blustery October day as we were driving south to Boston airport. We stopped in Cape Neddick, a New England coastal resort, very much boarded up for the winter, to stretch our legs. The only people around seemed to be this young couple, romantically entwined in their Dodge Ram pickup truck staring out to sea, holding on to the last remnants of the summer season. It’s now 15 years later and when I look at the image, I wonder what became of the couple, maybe they are still together, maybe living still in Cape Neddick, maybe raising a young family. I hope so but somehow I doubt it. Maybe I should go back and search them out.

Several years after I took the image, it was picked up through Millennium Pictures for the cover of the final part of the celebrated Frank Bascombe trilogy of novels, Lay of the Land by the great American novelist Richard Ford. After it was published we struck up a correspondence and he bought a print, the only other one printed from this edition so far. The print (2/10) is a 24 x 20” Lamba C-Type print.

The auction takes place on 15th Nov with a public viewing on Tues 13th/14th at the FT Building, 1 Southwark Bridge, London. Other prints in the auction are from some very well known names including Tom Stoddart, Jane Bown, Slim Aarons and Cecil Beaton. Richard Ford has also very kindly donated a signed first edition of Lay of the Land to go with the auction of the Cape Neddick print

Manchester United are playing in Cluj, Northern Romania tonight in the Champions League. It reminded me, I visited the area in the early 90s not long after the Ceausescu regime fell. Although the town itself was desperately run down, I met some great people there, including this couple, both in their 90s.

They had were born before the Balkan war in 1912, lived through the First World War when Romania eventually sided with the Allies, through the Second World War when the country reluctantly sided with Germany, switching to the Allied side in 1944, through the post war Soviet years when Romania was under Russian rule, through the brutal 1965 to 1989 Ceausescu regime and living to see independence in the 1990s - amazing lives

To artist’s Henny Acloque studio, in London on Thursday. As well as a solo show in Liverpool in January, she was invited to exhibit at the Royal Academy Summer Show and is part of the Polemically Small exhibition of 50 British artists at Orleans House Museum till September. Wandle Nights

Around 5 years ago, I began a long term series of photographs based on the Wandle Valley in south London near where I live. The images all taken at night began to develop at a time when I was very busy during the days either shooting commercially for clients or just getting on with a busy family life . So when evening came and all was a little quieter, I began to walk, cycle or occasionally drive up and down the Wandle river and the surrounding areas taking photographs. As the series developed I began to find that the places that seemed mundane and nondescript during daylight, the suburban backstreets, cul-de-sacs and parks, came alive under street lights and dusky skies. Conversely, the main streets and shopping areas that seemed so full of life in daylight became dull and uninspiring as darkness fell.

Jed Mercurio - Writer, producer, director.

Watch out for Jed’s new police drama series, In the Line of Duty which launches on BBC2 next Tuesday. It’s a thriller set in a Birmingham anti-corruption unit likely to have many twist and turns. Jed’s past TV work has included the medical drama’s Cardiac Arrest and Bodies. He has also written novels The American Adulterer and Ascent. This shot was taken on Hampstead Heath, seven or eight years ago.

Jemma Phipps - Artist

This was shot last year in Jemma’s London, Chelsea studio, the same studio that John Singer Sargent and Augustus John worked from. In the past few years she has had huge success as a portrait artist and has been commissioned to paint The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles. She is the daughter of the acclaimed equine artist Susan Crawford.
